Jade – Working mum until the end

Few people have caused as strong and varied reactions as Jade Goody has in her short life in the celebrity spotlight.

The girl who made her name as a reality TV star has courted controversy from the start and has had a pretty bad press over the years.

Love her or hate her, it seems that even the most critical are giving her a break now as she nears the end of her short life.

I have nothing but respect for this amazing working mother.  She is using the time she has left to do what she knows best, living her life in the media spotlight and trying to make as much money for her two little boys as she possibly can before the inevitable happens.

Whatever I have felt about her in the past, Jade – the ultimate working mother – is in my prayers now.

She has also raised awareness of cervical cancer which has resulted in a marked rise in the number of cervical smear tests.

My closest friend at college, Rachel, died of cervical cancer when she was 27 – she was taken too soon and I still don’t understand it all.   There is not a day I don’t think of her.  When she was first diagnosed, the saddest part for her was that she was never going to be able to be a mother, something she very much wanted.

Rachel, like Jade, was courageous to the end.  Her strength, like Jade’s, was inspirational.

That’s my boy

Daddy and Natan were having a chat.

Daddy asked:

“Natan, do you want to ride your bike or go to the toy shop?  Your choice.”

Natan thought for a moment and then answered:

“I want to ride my bike to the toy shop.”

That’s my boy.

A mother’s work…

Anthony was away last week on his annual boys’ snowboarding trip (even though he is nearing the wrong side of 35 for annual boys’ snowboarding trips and will soon be resorting to golfing weekends more appropriate to his age).

Natan and I had a lovely week together.  We had lots of chats and he was great company.   He was so grown up and helpful and I really enjoyed spending time with him.

He  asked after his daddy of course and asked when daddy was coming back from holiday and was really pleased to see him when he got home, but he definitely understood the concept of going on holiday.

Grandma and Grandpa also got back from their holiday in America last week.  He really missed them and was obsessed with Grandpa picking him up from nursery when he got back.

So… Daddy’s been to Austria, Grandma and Grandpa have been to America… Mummy, on the other hand, has been to….

…Tesco’s (a few times), to work (rather a lot of times), to the doctor’s (once) with a nasty throat infection and to check Natan’s injuries after he was accidentally hit in the face with a wooden block at nursery by an unidentified child (as they are not allowed to name names, although Natan said it was Aiden).  Mummy’s also been ankle deep in water (after the washing machine leaked all over the floor) and to the pub (once) on her regular night out with two girlfriends (who really should know better than to keep the wine flowing like that).

A mother’s work is never done…
