Where were you when Michael Jackson died?

That will be the question asked around the world over the coming days, months, years.

Whether you loved him or hated him, he was a legend, an icon, one of the most famous men on the planet.

It’s strange when someone so familiar, but that you’ve never met dies.  You feel like you knew them, but you didn’t really.

Where was I when Michael Jackson died?  Updating Facebook and Twitter at home after a long day at work.  The rumours flew around the social networking sites.  “He’s dead.” “He’s in a coma.” “No wait, he’s dead.” “Nope, in a coma.”

Well he is dead.  One of the greatest icons of all time – loved by millions, hated by the same.  Few led such colourful and bizarre lives.  He sold a quarter of a billion albums worldwide – not sure anyone will ever be able to claim that again.

RIP Michael Jackson.  Somehow things will never be quite the same.

  1. I was being born. Into a world LinkedIn to twitter and wordpress. Appropriately for Michael Jackson’s first hit, Rockin’ Robin. There has always been a Michael Jackson song for every occasion right throughout my life. The big 5 oh for me next year and I don’t mean tour dates.
A sad day! The music world and ‘40 somethings’ will miss him.

At a dinner at Murrayfield Edinburgh celebrating the Chemical Industry Awards. Rumours began to go around the room and someone checked it out on the BBC website.

Many years ago, (1992 I think – it was the day Linford Christie won the 100m at the Olympics) I had tickets to see him at Wembley. 4 of us got there at 1:00 to get a good place for his concert that evening. At 7:30 the support ‘band’ came on, played and went.

At about 8:15 a guy came to the front of the stage to announce that he was ill and wouldn’t be playing!

I never will get to see him. RIP. It’s Bad, really, really Bad!

If the concert organisers are smart they will get selected music stars leaving tributes now to play at the concerts & turn them into a worldwide tribute with BandAid proportions and donate to good causes. I bet less than 10% would want money back & their tickets would be resold anyway.

Who would we have at London?
